Tip of the Month

Overcome user ad-blindness with better ad placements

A general principle for ad placements says that you should place your ad units high up on the page so your users will see them easily. However, ad units placed at the absolute top of the page (before any content) tend to suffer from user ad-blindness and on average show a 61% lower CTR than ads below the header and closer to the content.

If you have an ad unit at the very top of the page, you should test whether moving the ad unit closer to the rest of your content, yet still above the fold, improves the ad performance.

  Improve ad placements
If you’re experimenting with placing an ad below the header, you can use this handy tool to check whether your ads are still appearing above the fold.

Updates

Launching the new step-by-step guide to DFP Small Business

If you're looking into monetizing your site with AdSense alongside other ad networks or direct advertisers, DFP Small Business is Google's free, hosted ad serving solution to help manage all of your ads. We've recently launched DFP Academy, a step-by-step guide to getting started with ad serving.

  Join DFP Academy

Broadcast live with Google+ Hangouts on Air

Want to host a live video broadcast and connect with your users in a new way? Google+ Hangouts on Air enable you to do just that - whether you want to teach a class, discuss a topic with active readers, or just share your content live in front of a global audience. Users can tune into your live stream from your Google+ page, your YouTube channel, and your site. Learn more about Hangouts on Air, and get started with hosting your own.

Save time with the Google Publisher Toolbar

The Google Publisher Toolbar is a new Chrome extension that allows you to view your performance data, drill down into ad unit statistics, and block ads by creative or URL - all while viewing your site in Chrome. Once you've installed the toolbar, you'll be able to see a snapshot of your account performance via a widget in the corner of your browser window. You can also enable ad overlays  directly on your page to block ads or to view more information about specific ad units. To get started with the Publisher Toolbar, just follow the instructions in our Help Center.

Check what's trending in the online display ads business

One of the ways we support our publishers is by giving access to new sources of knowledge that enables them to make the most from display advertising. We therefore recently introduced the "Display Business Trends: Publisher Edition" which shows you the top site verticals in the AdSense network in terms of monetized impressions and allows you to compare CPMs across ad sizes, countries, and verticals.

Manage access to your AdSense account for multiple users

In response to the most highly-requested feature that we've heard publishers ask for, it's now possible to invite new users to access an AdSense account. With this new feature, you'll be able to give colleagues or partners access to your account, but with certain restrictions around the information that they can see and edit. For more information about getting started, visit our Help Center.

Tip of the Month

Fix your crawler errors for improved ad relevance

In last month's newsletter, we announced the redesign of the AdSense crawler errors notification area, which is improving in the way we convey crawler error information to you. Ensuring that the AdSense crawler can accurately crawl your site helps increase your ad relevance and ultimately your earnings.

Check the crawler errors report section in your account to see if any domains or subdomains are experiencing AdSense crawler errors. Click on the "How to fix" column to read more about how you can fix each of the different types of issues.

  Fix crawler errors
Be sure to prioritize the domains or subdomains with the greatest number of errors first, as those will have the most substantial impact on your account. You can also expand each of the listed URLs to reveal a more specific list and even download them, if you want to.

  Tip of the Month

Think about your users and existing content when adding new units

Placing additional ad units on content-rich and policy-compliant pages of your site is one of the most revenue-positive changes you can make to your AdSense implementation. You can place new ad units on pages that aren't yet showing AdSense ads, or increase the number of AdSense ad units to three

  Create new ad units
Whether your ads are from AdSense or other sources, the focus of your site should always be on delivering the best possible user experience. When choosing where to place new ad units, consider the layout of your pages and the amount of content on them. For more information and recommendations, check out our video below.

Dear publisher,

We'd like to thank you for your participation throughout 2011 and we're looking forward to continuing a successful partnership with you in 2012. To help you boost your revenue early in the year, our first "Tip of the Month" focuses on one of quickest but most efficient optimisation tips: Improving your ad styles. You'll also find information on:
  • AdSense in Indonesian
  • Publisher satisfaction and acting on your feedback
  • Updating your contact details
  • Using Custom Search Ads for Mobile
  • Knowing the top five policy resources

  Tip of the Month
Boost your AdSense revenue with improved ad styles

By making your ads more visible for users, you can increase your click through rate and ultimately your AdSense revenue. Base the colour design of your ad units on one or more of the three basic techniques: Blend, Complement or Contrast (see below). We've found through working with publishers that ads with light coloured borders or no borders at all perform best.

When choosing colours, also take the position of your ad units into consideration: If an ad is well integrated into your site's content, blending the ads can underline the feeling of contextual relevance. For an ad unit which is further away from the main content, more contrasting colours can help catching the user's attention. If you have a website with repeat visitors, you might want to switch the ad colours occasionally to avoid ad blindness. Remember, the goal isn't to confuse users into thinking ads are content, but to get users to see and read the ads so they can click on those that interest them.

  Optimise your ad styles today

We've also recently launched an improvement to our default font settings. For each ad unit that's set to show the default font face and font size, our system will now automatically show the best-performing option. You can find more information about this improvement in our Inside AdSense blog.

Updates
AdSense now speaks Indonesian
We are happy to announce that we launched AdSense for Indonesian content on February 1st. If you have a website or a mobile optimised site in Bahasa Indonesia, you'll now be able to earn money by showing Google AdSense ads. Simply implement AdSense on your site in Bahasa Indonesia to start displaying contextually targeted ads.

Read more about this in our Inside AdSense blog.

Publisher satisfaction - Your feedback matters
If you're opted in to receive occasional surveys from us, you may have seen or filled out our bi-annual publisher satisfaction survey. Over 28,000 publishers participated globally, and we received more than 33,000 comments on your favourite aspects about AdSense as well as changes you'd like to see. Your feedback is very important to us and helps us to make the program better for all of you.

Read more about the results of the survey and the steps we're taking to address your suggestions on our Inside AdSense blog.

Update your AdSense contact details
We've heard from some publishers that they prefer to receive AdSense-related messages at a different email address than the one we currently use to contact them. You can now specify your preferred personal contact email, contact name and phone number you'd like us to use to reach you. You can find more information in our Inside AdSense blog.
